Posts: 1333 (08/26/09 02:44:38) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Remove this ad Hi Skaters, While things have not been what they used to be in some parts of Europe & Industry Skate team sponsors have had there teams attending a range of meets & not just WIC, to chase more impact for their Dollar, the transfer market looked dead, but in reality its very active. We can be sure that in 2010 Joey Mantia, Scott Arlidge & Nicole Begg will be 3 who will have a change of sponsors, who else of the top skaters are likely to transfer to other teams is unknown at this stage, the current economical climate appears to be looking a bit brighter on the horizon, so who knows. A number of the less known International brands appear to be chasing big name individual stars, as opposed to getting teams, so lets wait for some more suprises, but thats 3 for sure. Bill

Posts: 1335 (08/27/09 09:59:33) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hi Andre, I would say definately not Atom wheels by the sounds of things, I do not know where Lugino stands in the Mix, in recent years Doug Glass has supposidly been his mentor, but the World knew that Joey is a top racer & likes racing the best, there was always going to be implications with Joey having to sit out the World games & forced to do the USA indoor champs. With Begg & Arlidge no drama there, Bont had been good for them & them for Bont, its just some minor shifts in Direction that facilitated the changes & will leave on good terms, with both further future career opportunities. Posts: 1338 (08/27/09 13:03:16) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hi Rollercource, Well no one hears much, its a confidential matter between sponsors & the skater. For instance some may have made contracts while the market was bouyant & before the recession, I know this year some lucky people had contracts, that there was a lot better value out there in the market place. Four or 5 years ago, top men could expect to collect around $40,000 USA sign on fee, I doubt if more than a handfull if that, get that kind of sign on fee at present. Apart from the Verducci team of ladies a few years back, who apparently got generous handouts & the Kia Motors team with the Korean Good looking Girl, who was reportidly on $100,000 USA plus, there have not been lucritive contracts for women, I would say in these times a $20,000 sign on fee would be tops. Also the prize money has decreased, everyone was hoping getting in the Olympics would boost there salaries, but we have to build the numbers up & open up new territories to bring in new sponsors, a few industry ones are hanging in there at present, but we need the ones from outside the Industry. Also at present the World Inline Cup does not have the glamour it used to & some thoughtless tinkering of the points system, has made a mockery of it, hopefully they see the light before its to late. But at present you could buy a top team of men, with about $50,000 USA up front for sign on fees. Cheers Bill

Are every WIC racers profesionnal and contracted? Or at the least breakeven while they are in europe for the racing? The WIC needs ex-athletes such as Botero to become the johan bruynell's of inline skating, and form more teams such as Zepto. Maybe the managers should be involved better on the front scene, in a prestigious way, to make it interesting for them to invest time and to find money etc.

Posts: 1340 (08/28/09 20:19:15) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hi Roli, Good ones are usually offered two year contracts, or some top ones 3 years. The team managers or coaches are paid very little, sometimes the skaters paid for or 5 times more, so no one wants to be a team manager, unless they have another Income source to support them. Joerg from Zepto was involved in the management of cycle teams & was one of the few who could bring in other than skate team sponsors. I was involved talking with him early on , as they gradually picked up one or two good skaters & built up over the past 5 years from seen by the previoius pro teams, as a bunch of no bodies, to one of the best teams allround nowdays. Joerg & Eginhard kept the name Zepto ( From memory a measurement of a period of time, less than 7 secs.) while even the WIC hierachy criticised them, that they needed a big brand name sponser, but as its turnt out perhaps 10 sponsors between 2,000 to 10,000 Euro a piece, are far better than no sponsers at all. As they are the only team that has really grown in recent times. Bill

Scott Arlidge Zepto to Powerslide, done deal at Europeans, Not just results, but equipment testing & reporting, well need to as Atom, from the same Factory & same family of Urathanes appeared to have it over Matter. Diego Rosero to Bont Arena, still conjecture but rumours stronger by the day, But this rumour & negotiations have been going on since around 2004, but with Rollerblade & many other pro teams in doubt, perhaps it is the real deal, with Cali teamate Tobon. Felix Rijhen to Powerslide International, badly needed someone with current form, a solo 3rd in the mens marathon is rated as good form & Powerslide the German based team, Felix ( The Cat ) might just get his well earned Bowel of cream. Nicole & Wayne Begg to x-Tech based in Asia. Well Roli, he will just continue to run his skate shop & group skates from his shop in Gripensee! lol Roli. Bill

Posts: 1417 (10/08/09 18:20:38) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hi joao, It depends on many things. 1/ The personality & seen marlketing value of the person. 2/ You can be the best in the World, just by training for the Worlds, but can you still be the best, when you have to travel each week & race your best, to help give your sponsor some worth. 3/ THe only teams were almost European based & particularly for Asian skaters, they could not get releases, or could not cope, with being away from home. 4/ Now there is less money & less teams, so very difficult for European skaters, let alone Foreign skaters. 5/ A 3 times Junior World Champion & won the marathon & the Long race & also won the famous St. Moritz race, could not get a team, so its not that easy. 6/ Unfortunately its a case of being a friend of a friend. 7/ For Instance last year we had the Bont ladies International team based in Weinfelden, in the big old house. Bont had some unfinished Business at Le Mans, & were interested in Hallam Holland 100 & Inline 111km St. Gallen endurance races. I also needed drivers for the long road trips, as many 8 to 15 hour trips are not easy & many overnight travel, trying to rest & sleep. So we created a " BONT ENDURO MENS TEAM " a) Guillermo Trinaroli - Argentina was the long partner of Tamara in the ladies team & also a proven long trip driver. b) Wayne Begg - New Zealand my son had done 2 previous 24 hour races & also a proven long trip driver. c) Rueben Martinez - Colombia a Tough long distace Guy, Our family personally agreed to buy his food to help him, be able to come, he won the Inline 111. d) Aaron Richard Arndt - Canada Skated for Bont previously won the Athens to Atlanta, Highly placed in Inline 111, shattered his leg in WIC race, I personally wanted to see the little guy with a big heart, be given another opportunity & not just cast aside, unfortunately his devastating Injury, did not come 100% & he could not live up to his own wishes, we demanded nothing from him, unless he was right. e) Livio Wenger - Switzerland, I had had strong links with helping coach him, when at Weinfelden & as the Swiss coach, but having to be part of other teams, that did not have Technical efficient coaches, I wanted that he could train under his father & our families Guidance, as I believed he could win a Worlds, the other men all skated the marathons for Nothing, except any winnings. I personally sponsored Livio from my own pocked 1,000 Swiss Franks to help him out a little, when I went to the Worlds, I went to hand him the second part of the payment & he said no, I dont deserve it till I win A medal, well after a bad season by his standards, he did not fire at Euro's & I had to be the stand in Coach for Switzerland at the World Champs, he went no where & I had to tell him, he was skating like a +%+@# & I wanted to see the Tough Guy I used to know, the Big Hungry mean Animal, well 2nd racing without team mates in the Marathon & only beaten by the next best skater to Joey, he restored his faith. So Joao, you may even be that special Junior refered to. Livio had some serious deficiences when tested after Worlds, that had seriously effected him, but even then he pulled out the X FActor & that was why I gave him a team spot & even shared with him something I do not have. So there is an insight & one specific case. Bill

Posts: 198 (10/09/09 04:36:42) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hi Joao, In my opinion and experience I think the best option is to get yourself over to a couple of the biggest races and enter on a single license, try to do well in the race to get yourself noticed and then talk to the right people after the race. Its not easy to get on a team and like Bill said, its mostly about who you know, and our sport is not swimming in the cash either so paid contracts aren't exactly growing on trees...but if you want it bad enough and are prepared to tough it out then it can be done. I think every WIC skater has plenty of stories to tell about sleeping on floors and getting by on the bare basics etc etc...if Billy ever writes a book he could dedicate at least a whole chapter to it! Posts: 1418 (10/11/09 12:50:10) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hi Joao, Well number 1 he caught everyones attention Song Quingyang From Chinese Taipei, but in Korea, Chinese Taipei & China, a tight reign are kept on there skaters & a season in Europe is out of the Question & like I have said before, Focusing on the World Champion ships & not having to perform for sponsors, for every week for a season, makes it easier to prepare for Worlds. You may not have a great life, of seeing the World & seeing the Big picture, but your chances of winning at Worlds are better. Jorge Vandenberghe From Belguim, good speed & good staying power, can double up & perform in two events on the same day, I know a team is definately interested in Jorge, so he is one, tough & able to keep on keeping on. Gwang Ho Choi Korea, This guy won 3 long races & part of a very strong team & like teamate sprinter BONG JU CHOI, is very good, but from a very stringent & strict environment & outside of that situation, are usually not such a force. 2 others I rate but a bit due to association, but I know the Pedigree, Livio Wenger had some deficiency imbalances & combined with the flu, was not up to his usual agressive racing standard, but Alone without team mates he produced the x factor, for 2nd in the marathon. To show despite a poor Europeans & Worlds, he could still find something. Mario Valencia, who skated for the USA, but needs to make better use of his arm swing for top end speed. But a lack of experience cost him dearly, I coached his mother to be a World Champion & I am sure with the same sort of drive & enthusiasm, he can make it also. Oscar Cobos from Colombia he won one, but for some reason I do not see him featuring in the senior ranks, I may be wrong, but I think in the mens probably his size may be a factor, as he appears mature in appearance, but not so tall, seeing around 6 foot people & finding good group position in Senior, is a totally different situaion than in Junior. Hi Joao seeing the Gringo has poartially hijacked the thread, New Zealand will be a real happening venue in Timaru for coaching & racing, in January & Febraury , National Championships, Indoor, Road & Bank Track, Open championships, where foreign akaters can compete, "Tour of South Canterbury", plus two Asianic Inline Cup Marathons, Training camp in the Hometown of the Begg family.
