US Olympic Qualifiers | ||||||||||
|
The US Longtrack skaters are competing for their spot at the 2010 olympics right now in Milwaukee, WI. Results are being updated daily here:
Men: http://speedskatingresult...p?p=4&e=3136&g=1 Women: http://speedskatingresult...p?p=4&e=3136&g=0 You'll notice the names of several famous US inliners (both men and women) in the results! Chad just got 2nd in the 5,000 which is pretty respectable given the past year's "experimental" training program, and being a father, etc. http://www.standard.net/t...drick-poised-last-hurrah |

Now training with the Italina National Team (LT), Alexi COntin raced this weekend in Erfut along great Enrico Fabris. Maybe Ippolito played for something in
there, since they both work for Rollerblade, but what is certain: Alexi is back in great form.
His 3k shows it the more, only 4 seconds behind his PB, that was done in super fast Salt Lake city in 2006: http://speedskatingresults.com/index.php?p=3&e=3150&r=4 |

Olympic Spotlight: Speed Skater's fast rise is a pleasant surprise | ||||||||||
|
From the print edition of the "Sunday Detroit Free Press," Michigan's Largest Circulation Newspaper. http://www.freep.com/
by Jo-Ann Barnas When Jilleanne Rookard strapped on her first pair of long-track speed skates and stepped onto the ice, the result was not pretty. "I couldn't even stand up on them -- I was hanging onto the wall," Rookard of Woodhaven said with a laugh. "I was horrible." That was three years ago. Today, Rookard is in Berlin, Germany, preparing for the first International Skating Union World Cup event of the season. The competition -- which begins later this week -- is the first of four and will assist in confirming the U.S. Olympic Team for February's Vancouver Winter Games. Ryan Bedford of Midland -- featured in this Olympic Spotlight space for short track a few weeks ago -- is the other Michigan native who was successful in qualifying for the U.S. World Cup team at the long-track trials last week in Milwaukee. But it is Rookard who has been the sport's biggest surprise as she tries to secure her spot for the Olympics. I caught up with Rookard, 26, by phone before a recent practice in Milwaukee, where she's coached by Kalamazoo native and 2002 Olympic bronze medalist Kip Carpenter and his Swift Speedskating Team. Here are five things to know about Rookard: 1. Rookard, who grew up in Carleton, is a former national champion in Inline. Her love for roller skating began at an early age; her family owns two roller-rinks, including Skateland Funzone in Woodhaven. 2. She's the seventh of seven children born to Claire and Bill Rookard, who died of a heart attack when Jilleanne was 18, just before she made her first world team in inline. "They're all my godparents," Rookard said of her siblings. "We're all close, and we all watch over each other." 3. Rookard quit inline in 2005, shortly after her mother was diagnosed with cancer. She briefly returned a year later -- and won a major competition -- before her sponsor, GLENN KOSHI, convinced her to try long-track speed skating. "He said, 'Fly out there, and try some ice,' " Rookard said. "So I went out there, and I was like, 'If God wants me to be there, then I'll pursue it.' Within one day, I got a coach, a place to live, a roommate and a job." Claire Rookard continues to receive treatment for multiple myeloma. 4. At last week's trials, Rookard won the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, and also earned spots on the World Cup team in the 1,000 and 1,500. "My goal was to skate my best, and to know that my best would be enough to qualifty," she said. 5. Rookard -- you can call her Jill -- dates world champion speed skater Trevor Marsicano. "He's teaching me about ice skating," Rookard said, "and I'm teaching him about roller groovin'." Contact Jo-Ann Barnas at: JBARNAS@freepress.com. Sophie Muir broke the Australian ladies 500m record in her second 500m for the event. Overall a great first World Cup for Josh, Sophie and Ben. Expect some great results over the next few world cups. Frank P.S. Alexis and Shane's times were French and New Zealand national records respectively!

I didn't see it ... Dutch television did not give live coverage, and their web-site (http://schaatsen.nos.nl/) only
contains the main races [site is in dutch, but video = video
with all respect for the Dutch die-hard ice crew ... but a very big congrats to the Dutch inliners that competed in Berlin Cheers, Vildeke ps: being Belgian ... Go Kris Schildermans! [as far as I know not an inliner ... for marathon ice skating we have http://www.svenmallezie.be/ who is also inliner, however not of the level of Swings and co] ... cool thing to see Aussies competing on ice

Roger's race, not worth a mention! Grabbed a bockworst when I realised he was for real! Over 7 mins doesn't qualify for world cup 5000m! He was 4 secs
behind last in B Division, so clearly the technique is poor, and it was clearly a bet being played out!
As for Belgiums, Argentinians, Breat Brits, Kiwis and Aussies - Let's stick together as minorities, Heerenveen will be a hoot! Frank And no, before anyone asks, I can't skate a 5000m in under 7 mins - I drink beer! |

Roger was attempting a new technique obviously, the only thing is that he had'nt tried it in a race before apparently, neither in front of thousands of
poeple and on dutch tv... What he got from it.....hek great media coverage that he would have never gotten before, his name is everywhere in holland sport
news, witch would'nt be even with a A-group top 10 or a B-group podium.
So, If he lets go this weird technique you'll see him back on top of the rankings, he a real deal (10th at worlds last year in Richmond). |

Rogers Technique | ||||||||||
|
He kept both feet on the ground along the straights and pushed with both feet.
The Dutch announcer referred to it as a new technique called the Schwietzer. I am confused. Was he injured? Edit: here is the text from the video translated from the Dutch: Many eyebrows furrowed in Berlin Saturday, when Roger Schneider began his five kilometers. The Swiss not skated on the straight, it looked more like waddle. He did not go faster, but was happy to laugh at his own bizarre race.

Hasn't Big Rog ever heard the fable of "The emperors new clothes"?
I think his coach suckered him into that one to win a bet! "I bet I can get the swiss guy to do the funky skate...I bet you 100 guilders (dutchman of coarse). and ROGER being as BIG as he is...who's brave enough to tell him he looked stupid. either that or he's been into the "Apple snaaps" a bit too often. But he still holds the world Inline record for fastest marathon (not going downhill ah Petey)....come back to the rollers Roger! cheers johnny |

Not shure his coach is dutch, as he does not train in europe with pascal anymore(who now has a aussie coach)...and more than anything shure that it was a stunt
made to get media attention in holland witch worked perfectly. You also have to consider the fallowing:
-next world cup is IN holland, skating meca -the most valuable of his skinsuit leg sponsor spots is VACANT ...if next weekend it is filled by a brand new sponsor, we'll have our answer. ...if he does that sled skating again next week in hereeveen, then the apple snaaps is a better argument. |
