Hi Kiwi,
Yes they are short of a few Cyclists for Sundays Criterium, you might like to through the bike aboard, yes we should have a reasonable field for skating, Robert & Mark better be sharp, prizemoney goes down to 4th, Mason & Millar will be here from Nelson & a strong Group from Christchurch & Timaru,so looking forward to it,I just have to try & get the handicaps right. Best be at Waimate by 12, after the skating there is a pot luck dinner at van der Heyden's house. Cheers Bill |

Hi Skaters,
First of all a very big thanks to those 23 skaters, who turnt up at the Waimate sports carnival, its races like this in front of other sports, sponsors & the public, that canlift the profile of our sport. when the Waimate Caledonian sports Society tell us, that their principle sponsor ALPINE ENERGY, was very intesrested & impressed with the skating, its good for our sport. Thanks to the following competitors. NELSON - Mason & Millar Macarthy. DUNEDIN - Brett, Robert & Mark McCormack. CHRISTCHURCH - Cory Williams. Miguel Porteus Matthew, Nicole & Emma Grigg. Mark McDonald. Ruby Ellis. Liam Bowman. TIMARU - Analise Le Roy. Nick Frame. Guy Mc Donald. Breigh Sample Dahna Penty. Sophie Lowan Lyndon Schollum Emily van der Heyden Nicole & Bruce Begg. Some very exciting Handicap races in the 5 events which gave the crowd what they wanted to see, with the smallest in the race & frontmarker Nicole Grigg getting a win & Scratch Marker Nicole Begg winning the 8 lap 3,200 meters points Handicap race. In the 3,200 pts race young Mark McCormack made the most of his 350 meter handicap,to claim the first 2 lots of 3 points, before the back Markers caught up, but enough to give him 4th place. With over 20 skaters spread out on the 400 meter oval, it provided a very good spectacle, for the appreciative spectators. Another highlight was ex pat Australian Short track Ice skater Cory Williams, who showed great off the line speed to gain a bronze at the N.Z. skating champs, lining up in the 100 meters Athletic sprint, Cory blasted out of the blocks, to have a 5 meter lead at the 60 meter mark, only to stumble a little at 90 meters, to be taken on the line & finish 2nd. RESULTS Race 1/ 400 meters B Grade. 1/ Miguel Porteus - 60 meters - Christchurch. 2/ Nicole Grigg - 150 meters - Christchurch. 3/ Guy McDonald - 60 meters - Timaru. 4/ Matthew Grigg - 70 meters - Christchurch. Race 2/ 800 Handicap A Grade. 1/ Brett McCormark - 120 meters - Dunedin. 2/ Cory Williams - Scratch - Christchurch. 3/ Nicole Begg - Scratch - Timaru. 4/ Bruce Begg - 150 meters - Timaru. Race 3 800 Open Handicap 1/ Millar Macarthy -200 meters - Nelson 2/ Bruce Begg - 250 meters - Timaru. 3/ Nicole Begg - Scratch - Timaru. 4/ Mason Macarthy -Scratch - Nelson. Race 4 500 Open Handicap. 1/ Nicole Grigg - 230 Meters - Christchurch 2/ Sophie Lowen - 190meters - Timaru. 3/ Nick Frame - 200 meters - Timaru. 4 = Dahna Penty - 120 meters - Timaru & Miguel Porteus Christchurch. Race 5 3,200 Handicap Points race. 1/ 15 pts - Nicole Begg - Scratch Timaru. 2/ 13 pts - Mason McCarthy - Scratch - Nelson. 3/ 7 pts - Cory Williams - 50 meters - Christchurch. 4/ 6 pts - Mark McCormack - 350 meters - Dunedin. On Sunday 2 of the skaters Breigh Sample rode im the Novice Girls cycle race for 2nd at the criterium road cycling races. Nicole Begg rode the B Grade 30 minutes plus 3 laps event alongside N.Z.Ladies Cycling reps Daile Tye & Kathy Jordan up from Southland, when the men applied the pace Nicole was usually in touch & went on to finish 5th comfortably clear of the two N.Z. representative ladies, in a very good effort. Cheers Bill |

Hey Billy,
Have there ever been any other inline clubs in Canterbury other than, 'Christchurch' and 'South Canterbury'? Was there ever a North or Central Canterbury club? Just curious. You seem to be the right man to ask. lol Cheers! -Corey |

Hi Cory,
In My time there was an Ashburton Club, but mainly Hockey & were South Island champions on numerous occassions, also some former North Island people shifted to there Landreths (Not Sure Spelling) I think Gerard was a N.Z. Champion & another done speed, but that was about 3 decades ago. At one time the two strongest speed clubs in New Zealand was Canterbury Court the Old N.Z. Roller skating club ( Affiliated to USA ) & Rollerdrome the Canterbury Amatuer Roller skating club ( affiliated to Europe ) Both associations fully combined at Napier for champs in 1970. after each had there own seperate ones before & a trial attempt. That was the year I won my first N.Z. title & was overall Champion ( Flat track & road ) But I am sure you can do a Bradbury & make History, but without the falls. Cheers Bill |

Speaking of the Rollerdrome, nearly sailed over the fence this evening. lol
Got those fast twitch muscles tuned up for next weekend Billy. So look out! Just dont stand too close to the barriers. I can see myself toppling right over in the time trial. ha ha ha ha ha! If Nicole's coming, make sure she's got those sticky wheels on! |

Hey Cory...believe it or not...a few of us went over the rails in the old days of wooden wheels...more like slid up the bank and pole vaulted actually. No such
thing as a grippy wheel back then, only the choice of Sycamore woods or NZ Tawa woods until the "mac one" nylon wheels came along.
Hopefully someone will have a camera a BT Nats and post some interesting race footage on bont tv for us. Personally, I think it is this type of "Goat Track" that has given the NZ skaters the great skills to do well on the international scene. cheers johnny |

Hi Skaters,
Well this weekend we see the New Zealand Bank Track championships held in Christchurch. With almost all the Top senior men missing, it will be robbed of some of its Glamour, the senior ladies are the same, with Nicole Begg not facing tough opposition. But the focus of attention will shift to the Junior Girls ( 13,14 & 15 years ) & the Juvinile Girls (10,11 & 12 years ) these two grades are the strongest they have been for nearly 2 decades. With Wanganui, Palmerston North, Upper Hutt, Christchurch & Timaru having good numbers of Female competitors. Local Christchurch Skater Mark MacDonald who was the outstanding Junior Boy at the Nationals, should get the local fans excited on his home track at the Rollerdrome, while an upset could occur in the mens time trial, with Ice /Inline skater Cory Williams on his home track, an ex Australian Junior Inline Skater, he switched his hand to Ice, he has since based himself in N.Z. he could cause an upset, as even on old skate set up of 3 x 100 & 1 x 84 set up skates he placed in the road nationals T/T. It should be a good competion in the lower grades. Bill

Hi Skaters,
One of the functions of champions must always be to put in some miles helping Charities, the Halberg trust, is one such high profile organization in N.Z. Dunedin is the home town of Kiwi Master alias Brett McCormack. You can check out on Nicole Begg's blogspot, or access the below link. http://www.ch9.co.nz/cont...%2526%2523039%3Bs-fastest Bill |

Hi Skaters,
Write Up with Photo in Timaru Herald today. Local Team for National champs. Bill Strong team for skating championships South Canterbury | Thursday, 19 February 2009 Email a Friend | Printable View | Have Your Say Related Links Subscribe to Archivestuff Have your say THE South Canterbury Roller Skating Club will have its best representation in a decade at the New Zealand Bank Track Championships in Christchurch this weekend. Eight of the 10 skaters will be on debut at the Sockburn track but the team will have former world champion Nicole Begg as their mentor. Begg and her mother Cheryl have been the cornerstone of the revival of the sport in Timaru, coaching every Sunday at the Caroline Bay rink. Bruce Begg, Nicole's uncle, is the only other with bank track experience and will race far younger skaters in the masters after being a regular attendee for decades. Analiese Le Roy, Sophie Lowen and Dahna Penty will race in the juvenile section, while Nick Frame is in the primary boys' section. The quartet all raced the New Zealand Indoor and Road Championships but it will be their first time on a bank track. For Guy McDonald, juvenile, and Linden Schollum, junior, it will be their first time in elite company. Begg is likely to be untested and keep her five-year clean sweep record of titles intact. In New Zealand she is untouchable from 200m to the marathon. In the junior girls, Emily van der Heyden of Waimate and Woodbury's Breigh Sample are the big improvers. They will be joined by Linden Schollum but they face the strongest junior field in nearly two decades. Junior world representative Renee Nyman, Wanganui, and likely team-mates Stephanie Challis, Upper Hutt, and Chloe Manning, Nelson, are attending the championships. These top skaters, along with Emma Lancaster, Palmerston North, are all in their final year as juniors, while the Timaru trio are in their first of three years in the grade, so it will take a big effort from them to make the podium. The juvenile girls is also a tough ask, but Penty already has a New Zealand sprint title on the road to her credit and is expected to be a leading contender, while Le Roy and Lowen continue to improve and will be more than competitive. Ten-year-old Guy McDonald is quick in the short sprints and is likely to win medals in the juvenile boys, while Nic Frame won medals on the road and should be on the podium on the bank track. The weather forecast looks crap for tomorrow. Which sucks, coz I'm itching to get into this time trial. I'd be keen to skate in the wet. But you soft
Kiwi's dont wanna risk it.
The weather on Sunday looks ok though. If it's cancelled on Saturday morn/arvo, will we race at night? Another option, will we just race it ALL on Sunday? Are there lights there? Cya tomorrow anyway, Sir Bill! -Corey |

Hi Skaters,
Not the best scenario no skating at 9am postphoned till noon, but intermittant showers, do hopefully we get underway, in the afternoon, big dissappointment with listed athletes withdrawn for various reasons, Kalon Dobbin, Shane Dobbin, Scott Arlidge, Daniel Leishman, Rhys Cortesi, Christan Alden, Peter Micheal, DJ Nation, Ollie Jones & Emma Lancaster. It would be hard for those overseas, who know how high the standard of N.Z. skating is on a World Wide scale,. to Visualize that only 2 senior Women & 4 Senior men will front the starter, thank god for open events. It looks like we will have a possible 1 pm start providing no more rain. Bill |
