If one existed my top 10 moments would certainly include: 1. 1975 - Italy - The Bill getting kicked over by Cruciani at the start of the 20km 2. 1978 - Argentina - the tear gas and baton charge of the police on the crowd when Scafati was grabbed just before the line 3. 1979 - Italy - the fall in Finale Emilia that wiped out an entire field bar perhaps 3 skaters 4. 1981 - Belgium - John Mullane moons the crowd (in the days before skinsuits!) 5. 1989 - New Zealand - Whitey and Dante Muse start to knock lumps off one another on the final bend leaving Gianini to win his first world title 6. 1994 - France - after doing one extra lap that no-one notices Australia win possibly the most exciting relay ever witnessed after USA, France and Argentina all take a tumble 7. 1995 - Australia - Martin Escobar has a bit of a to-do with another skater in the marathon so he picks up a traffic cone and proceeds to hit him over the head with it 8. 1999 - Chile - Chad Hedrick does all 100 laps of the 20km elimination on the front and then still takes 15m out of Max Presti on the final lap 9. 2001 - France - (not strictly a skating moment but...) the food fight on the last night has to go down as one of the funniest I've witnessed. It made the splurge gun scene in Bugsy Malone look tame in comparison 10. 2006 - Korea - Triberio winning the 500m after Joey Mantia does sub 40 seconds in the semi-final I'm sure there are many more. Cruciani didn't compete in his first worlds until 1978. So it wasn't him that took Bill out at the start of the 20000m, a reliable source says it was someone closer to your homeland... The tear gas and baton charge was in 1975. Your Dad gave me the best descrption of this. And I actually have the video of the fall in '79 at Finale Emilia. It was on the second last corner. There were bodies everywhere. Mick McGeough was all lined up for a medal, no doubts about it. You should have seen DePersio's face when he went across the line with his arms in the air and then saw the bodies all over the track. It went from the heights of ecstasy to Oh **** what do I do now in the space of 2 nano seconds. DeCesaris was standing on the track and was bracing himself to act as a mattress... I'd have to include the 1980 Italian team being threathen with being arrested for trying to skate on the road circuit in the middle of the day. Mind you the road was a main thourghfare in Masterton. 1988 When Tony Keefe dropped a waterbomb (that wouldn't have been out of place on the Enola Gay) from the second story of the house we were staying in at Santa Maria Nova. It knocked Bill off his feet and almost broke his neck. Bill was on the ground not knowing what happened. There are just so many that I could write page after page. I have to be careful though as I know Beggster likes to make sure the slate is evened up... Hope all is well. Regards from all the Woods family.

Posts: 209 (05/10/07 01:35:13) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	this one is slightly more obscure. but does anyone have any footage of the banked track heats in colombia 96 (junior worlds) when duggento biffed a canadian skater (could it have been A R Arndt) over the barrier for having the cheek to actually attempt to pass him! or the first training day on the road track in mar del plata 97 when entire teams were crashing after losing wheels down the gaping holes in the course after the money to re-do the track mysteriously disappeared. there used to a famous (or infamous) crash tape floating around NZ (jeff yeoman maybe) which had some great footage...maybe some of these incidents are on there somewhere......

In Grenoble in '87 he'd got the hots for one of our young lasses and said that he'd marry her if she won a world title. Much to his horror she then went round telling the world she was now officially engaged! However, this was nothing compared to the look on his face as she sprinted for the line against Canafoglia in the 3000m. Priceless!! Luckily for him she was pipped at the post or else it might have meant another Brit going to the colonies!! Regards to all! John

I overdubbed it with music such as I'm Still Standing (Elton John), Catch My Fall (Billy Idol) and Free Fallin' (Tom Petty) - so you can see how long ago that was! It included clips like the Finale Emilia wipe out Brute wrote about. Also the 88 worlds in Cassano d'Adda where Tony Muse left the track 6 foot in the air in the 1500m, Oscar Galliazzo wiped out the timing equipment plus a Canadian judge (Rhonda I think her name was) going for the line against Dante Muse in the 5000m and Dante Muse falling going for line against Sarto in the 20km elimination - and losing a nipple in the process! But two of the most obscure for me was 1. when Dante, after finishing a race (Colombia 90 I think) looked behind him - then turned back and literally head butted someone coming onto the track and lost his front teeth as a result 2. ..but probably best of all...Laura Perinti, reigning world champion sprinting for the line, just 10 metres to go and clear of everyone else and looking a dead cert to retain her title when an ambulance man jumps the barrier to attend to a fall on the other side of the track - wiping her clean out!! Ghermandi rolled passed her in disbelief to take the title. Argentina -1983. Both of these are on DVD and have to be seen to be believed! Fry Junior

But when Water Bomb Chief Jed swung the lime bomb in the window & exploded while you Me & Ann were playing 500, I thought he was lucky to live another day. Well the Gunner & Shark famous Water Bomb with additives that the dropped & splattered aMilan corner street nightworker with, was the most disgusting effort, I ever knew off. Bill

Not the best quality but still there for posterity. I think my dad spent a whole day at his house in Sydney back in the mid 80's taking bits of film and putting them onto another tape. Thor - email me your address at john.fry2 @ ukonline.co.uk and I'll see what I can dig out. I'm sure Bill's got plenty of stories to share - Tiger the dog, the Morris Minor on bricks, Curt Labeda and the snake in the bed and one of my favourites... ..John & Ann Mullane being picked up from the airport in the early hours by Bill in his pick up after an 18 hour flight and having to freeze to death on the flatbed beacuse there was no room in the cab. As if that wasn't enough Bill then decides to go flat out over a humped back bridge....John, Ann and luggage all took off 6 feet in the air! Mullane was raging to say the least...but Bill being Bill thought it so funny, he turned round and did it again..!! Unfortunately, one of those moments NOT captured on video Fry Junior

I was lucky enough to be a witness, and to be honest it changed my life: most of the time during the event I was too absorbed contemplating in awe Darlene Kessinger and other beauties of the era, but the moment I saw Massimo Muzzi giving the finger* to the stupid local crowd, I thought: I WANT TO BE LIKE HIM! 25 years later I believe I succeeded *Actually his obscene gesture was a latin ¡°sleeve cut¡± (flexing an arm with the other hand inside the elbow), and the ignorant Argentinean spectators really deserve it.

He took 15 metres out of the rest of the field...in a 1500m! True, the track did resemble an ice rink at that time, but the only time I recall someone power away like that in such a short distance was Stephen Whyte in the 500m in Hastings and Chad in his first worlds win in the 1500m in 1994...

I dont have all the events you mentioned - but do have a few doozies in there including: Anybody remember 1995 Perth 20k elimination where everybodys favourite Italian referee tried to disqualify the entire field one by one in the hope of an Italian taking the gold? It was all going to plan until the finishing straight when Downing put M. Presti in a headlock. Vidal (Arg) ended up with a medal and he had been eliminated 5 laps earlier! 1996 Padova 500m finals - My crash tape reveals slow motion replays of Nicoletta Gallessi doing the splits just before the finish line - emphasis on the word SPLIT! 2000 Colombia 500m final (track) - Keith Turner crossed the finish line sliding on his chest in an effort to tackle (or avoid being tackled?) by Diego Betancur (I think) who crossed the line on his butt! Jumbo was eventually awarded the gold I think... I can see that I am going to end up spending a few days re-watching all this stuff! Oh well...thats why they invented sick leave... Jeff

An Argentine skater falling on the final straight grabs hold of the number the poor Spanish guy in third. The kid cant make it to the line quick enough to get a medal while dragging the extra weight and ends up a narrow 4th by a matter of centimetres. The Argy is disqualified - but that doesnt give the other guy a medal. Tragic circumstances to be in - but it was fantastic to watch over a few beers and a pizza! J

Posts: 209 (05/16/07 00:55:23) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	hey jeff, yeah i remember those moments, the 20km in perth was classic, my favourite part of that was when the judge disqualified the 6ft plus jorge for the minor indiscretion (one skate about 2 cm's inside the track, after he was shoved there by another skater) of his 5 foot 5 colleague, which happened directly in front of the judge in question..... and to prove there was no justice that year, the junior who grabbed the spaniard over the line got a bronze medal in the points race the next night, maybe he shoulda handed it over to make up for the one he robbed! if you ever get a chance to put some of those old clips on youtube jeff, make sure you include the "sightseeing" tapes as well.....
