 At the request of Nicole Begg, we have striped down an 11.92¡± 1004 S-frame to give it less rigidity to the insane weight of just 84g. The strength of the frame is still high, and Nicole will be racing on these frames at the world championships in Anyang commencing September 2.  alx |

84 grams is insanely light, but they certainly look a lot sharper than the standard frames.
Alex, do you intend to make them a production option and how do you think they will perform in the longer sizes? Cheers...Obe |

Hi Obe,
R & D for improvement off all Bont products, is an ongoing daily happening, some slight tinkering here & there, can make a difference, but we talk about one being better for the Banktrack, with some slight adjustments & one being better for the road with no tinkering. Its happening for the future, you big guys were first up in the R & D testing, before the shorties. But to find out there effectiveness, they need to be run at the highest level, not to many top skaters, are prepared to play with prototypes, at the highest level, unless they are real keen on the product. She is not tied to the product by sponsor deals or such, but her results & the response of the set up have been such, that she is helping them to reach their full potential, with the testing program & rcing in the Worlds top competitions on the new prototypes of the product. Thanks for the quick and concise reply. I didn't for one moment think the new style frame would hit the market without proper R&D!!! Be interested to hear what the top athletes think of them. I'm also very interested to hear what Nicole's feedback will be after she has completed at the worlds. Though no matter what occurs, I am sure she will do herself proud as usual!! And her dad too!! Next year's S-frame will have less S on the outside of the sidewall to allow for more graphics. Many skaters said they liked the concept but not the look of the S-frame, so a new extrusion was needed in order to add graphics. With a new extrusion we will need different cutouts from the frame to the one pictured above.

Won't changing the S's mess with the strength/weight ratio?

What will happen is there will be more metal added between the S on the outside of the sidewall. This will make the frame slightly heavier and stronger. We will then make some cutouts in areas of low stress to get the weight and strength back to where it is now, but have a better surface area for graphics.

 Fatigue Limit  Yield Stress Limit   We took Nicole¡¯s 11.92¡± frame and ran it through the computer to see what it would do if it were a 13.2¡± frame. The stress tests are more than in the acceptable range. Both files (each has a pair of images) are the same stress run, one just shows red wherever the stress is above the yield strength of the material (none) and the other shows red wherever the stress is above the fatigue limit of the material. What that means is that you might expect the material to fatigue in the red areas over a long period of time and multiple repeat loadings. In this particular analysis, I used the 800 pound total load (80, 160, 240, 320 front to back wheel @ 10 degrees off vertical). The results are pretty amazing considering the light weight of the frame. If you would like to see exactly how we get to these results, you can download the PDF below. We have done testing on frames that we know have broken to tweak the program to make sure it is working well and we have cut out windows in frames and watched them bend in real life, then run the design through the program and it has predicted the areas where the frame has bent or cracked. Hi Skaters,
The key factors being that both in Theory & practicle testing, the results compared. One set of longer frames, with what was considered maximum cut outs. In one case we deliberately set out an 80kg skater to go on deep edges & tight circles, with all the load on one foot, twisting from side to side. Alex was in Switzerland at the time, without advising the manufactoring branch of any areas of concern, Alex got them to do the theory stess testing the results were comparable, so the Bont assessments, are not a stab in the dark, its vry controlled. Once again Bont is prepared to share its technology, with the general skaters, a area most manufacturers in the world,would cretainly not. Bill |
